Dili, September 4, 2026 — The Centro Nacional Chega! I.P., in cooperation with the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), organized a 5-day training program from August 31- September 4, 2026, for 38 public employees from the National Archives of Timor-Leste (ANTL), the Archive and Museum of the Timorese Resistance (AMRT), the Secretariat of State for Arts and Culture (SEAK), the Max Stahl Audiovisual Centre of Timor-Leste (CAMSTL), the Xanana Gusmão Reading Room, and Centro Chega!.
The training was facilitated by ANRI and focused on first-line restoration, full-scale restoration, the digitization of archives, and disaster management for archives.
In his remarks at the closing of the training, Hugo Maria Fernandes, Executive Director of Centro Nacional Chega!, thanked ANRI for facilitating the program and helping employees strengthen their technical skills and knowledge in archival science, particularly in protecting historical memory through the preservation of documents, photographs, audio recordings, and audiovisual materials.
“This cooperation focuses on strengthening technical skills and scientific knowledge, particularly in protecting historical memory through the preservation of documents, audio recordings, and audiovisual materials currently preserved by Centro Chega!, AMRT, ANTL, and SEAK. Therefore, on behalf of Centro Chega! and the institutions that participated in this training, I would like to express our gratitude for this cooperation,” the Director said.
He highlighted that the training is an important step and a bridge toward supporting the legal framework for archives in Timor-Leste, as Timor-Leste still does not have one.
The training was conducted as part of the cooperation between Centro Chega! and ANRI, with support from UNESCO’s program, “Sharing Knowledge and Capacity-Building Program on Archives and Documentary Heritage from the Republic of Indonesia to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste: Training on Archives Preservation Phase II.”
