Dili, July 7, 2026 – The Centro Nacional Chega!I.P., Asia Justice and Rights Timor-Leste, Instituto Nacional de Desenvolvimento Mão-de Obra (INDIMO), and Dili Institute of Technology (DIT), alongside family, held a Memorial Mass to honor Patric Ernest Walsh’s memory at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Dili. The Mass was presided over by Father Jovito do Rêgo de Araújo and attended by Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão.
Following the Mass, attendees scattered flowers and lit candles at the Cave of Antigo Comarca Balode; Centro Chega! dedicating a room to Pat Walsh, as he had worked for the promotion of human rights in Timor-Leste; reflections focused on his legacy and contributions. Pat Walsh, aged 83, was an Australian human rights activist and a close friend of Timor-Leste. He passed away in Melbourne, Australia, on December 29, 2025.
Hugo Maria Fenandes, Executive Director of Centro Chega!, stated that the deceased Pat Walsh was a guiding influence for many. He dedicated himself to the well-being of all people—not just those in positions of power, but also ordinary individuals. Pat was a calm person who could neutralize any situation. Although he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the hearts of the people of Timor-Leste.
On the same occasion, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão remarked that Pat Walsh was a man of social conscience and moral responsibility, standing alongside the people of Timor against injustice. The Prime Minister recalled how, during the Indonesian occupation, Pat was never afraid to defend Timor-Leste in its struggle for independence. After the restoration of independence, Pat continued to contribute to the Commission for Reception, Truth, and Reconciliation (CAVR), helping to document the history of Timor-Leste and promote truth and reconciliation. He also supported the establishment of Centro Nacional Chega! to preserve historical memories, promote human rights education, and foster a culture of peace.
