(Dili, April 25, 2024), Centro Nacional Chega!I.P held a National Conference at the Antigo Comarca Balide Room on “50 Years of Historical Moment on April 25, Reflection on Decolonization in Timor-Leste between 1974-1975” aimed to increase the knowledge of the public regarding the dynamic of the social, political, and military situation in the decolonization process between 1974-1975. It dived into the participants’ comprehension regarding the people’s experiences and hopes since the change in the decolonization process. Additionally, the conference brought participants learning lessons for peacebuilding and reconciliation.
Today, April 25, 2024, it has been 50 years since the Carnation Revolution entailed democracy transitions in Portugal and led to the consequences of a decolonization process. Henceforth, the situation in Timor-Leste had various occurrence aspects, such as social lives, politics, and military in the capital and even local areas, not culminate in internal conflict militaries that had significant violence in the modern history of the people of Timor-Leste. However, its implications led to nowadays.
Therefore, 50 years of Historical Moment on April 25 is an essential moment of reflection for remembering the memories and understanding the dynamic situations regarding the experiences, hopes, and desires of the people at that time in the context of these dynamics that led to particular actions that finally have written the history of Timor-Leste.
Centro Chega! is an institution committed to transforming the memory of the past to be the learning lessons for peacebuilding and reconciliation through this conference. It was a moment of reflection and intergenerational dialogue, showing empathy and compassion for peace and reconciliation.
