(Dili – 25th of March) – the public institute of Centro Nacional Chega!I.P cooperated with the international United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Ministry of Education of Timor-Leste (ME) held a 2-day workshop (from 25-26 March) for the teacher network history on the quality of history and peace education in Timor-Leste.
The 30 teachers who participated in the workshop were from 13 municipalities, including the Special Administrative Region of Oe-Cusse, Ambeno (RAEOA), and each municipality sent 1 female and 1 male teacher.
The principal objective of the workshop was to increase the teachers’ knowledge and even their teaching consciousness, capacities, and abilities regarding the history and peace education in Timor-Leste. The other objective was to update their teaching methodologies based on the available books, reports, audio, and visual stuff. During the workshop, teachers have shared and learned experiences mutually the mechanism of teaching based on the ability of each of them.
The reason why Centro Chega! Provided teacher workshop as their roles are essential. The role of the history of education in promoting social and trust cohesion from the rural to the national community level is vital for conflict reconciliation and peacebuilding promotions. It did not share the knowledge on the aspect of past challenges only. However, the history of education strengthens the coming generations to be future visioners collectively to build a cohesive community and society.
To use the positive education of history potentially for reconciliation and peacebuilding not to be just an imperative. However, it ensures that teaching materials, including the school curriculum, present a balanced and inclusive narrative, and also integrate civic and peace education in pedagogical approaches. It involved focusing on the obligation and responsibility of the youths to be an active contributor to the societies.
The workshop was a significant factor belonging to the teachers. They are the ones of straight education providers who must recognize the importance of history and peace education as the power for reconciliation and peacebuilding. Teachers must have the knowledge, abilities, and resources needed to provide history education as a means of facilitating and promoting tolerance, respect for one another, and co-existence among the students. Therefore, teachers are the instruments to build future generations, not only informing the past conflicts but even compromising to promote comprehension and harmony in the communities where they belong and others.
