TRP-TF AND CENTRO CHEGA! PRESENTED GENERAL VIEWS OF RECONCILIATION TO THE PRIME MINISTER

Dili, 08 August 2025 – The Timorese Reconciliation Process Task Force (TRP-TF) and Centro Chega! I.P. presented a Concept Note outlining their general views to the Prime Minister of the IX Constitutional Government, Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão. At the end of the dialogue between the TRP-TF members and the Prime Minister, spokesperson Joaquim Russo Fonseca addressed this matter during a press conference at the Chega! Museum, at the Antigo Comarca Balide, Dili.

Joaquim Russo emphasized that this dialogue presents a valuable opportunity for TRP-TF members and Centro Chega! to introduce their proposed Prior Steps for the Reconciliation Process to the Government. He explained, “Today, we have submitted two documents. The first is the Concept Note for the Reconciliation Process, which provides a general view of reconciliation. This is the central theme of our discussion. The second document is the Terms of Reference for the Reconciliation Process, outlining the necessary technical steps that must be undertaken to facilitate reconciliation among the Timorese.”

Additionally, when will this be implemented? Asked the journalists. He clarified that it is currently in the Preparatory Process. Furthermore, to talk about reconciliation, it has been conducted previously during the CAVR’s time, known as Community Reconciliation, as well as Civil Society Organizations. Therefore, we are continuing the earlier processes that have been conducted. “It will take two to three months to operationalize this process, as we need to define the terms of reference, establish operational procedures, identify key individuals, and prepare those who will facilitate within the community,” he explained.

When asked about the Prime Minister’s orientation regarding the TRP-TF, Joaquim replied that the Prime Minister did not provide the orientation, but he appreciated these documents. It is not to be praised, but he gave his views on the documents that were prepared by the Task Force to adjust some points outlined within the documents. Overall, the documents are seen positively by the Prime Minister. He acknowledged the efforts of TRP-TF and committed to providing both personal and governmental support for the reconciliation process.
